Curriculum for January 14 - 18
- This week we begin our study of colors. Over the next 5 weeks we will learn about the characteristics of color, vocabulary words ...like primary and secondary and how color is integrated throughout our daily lives. Our unit begins with the students having a scavenger hunt in the classroom for colors, using this opportunity to reveal what they already know about them and introducing them to new color words and concepts. The children will then create colored water bottles using the primary colors, red, yellow and blue. They will also be painting with watercolors and colored corn syrup, observing how the colors change when they are mixed together. Finally, the children will taste different colored juices and talk about how color is an important part of the food we eat.
To extend the curriculum at home, you and your child can play with this concept by using food coloring to change the color of familiar foods. Allow your child to add colors to milk, juice etc. and see what observations they make about the food. Does it taste the same? What is the new color called? Will it change if you add another color? You can also read, Cat's Colors by
Jane Cabrera with your child.
